Cross-layer quality-driven adaptation for scheduling heterogeneous multimedia over 3G satellite networks

چکیده
Wireless networks are experiencing a paradigm shift from focusing on the traditional data transfer to accommodating the rapidly increasing multimedia traffic. Hence, their scheduling algorithms have to concern not only network-oriented quality-of-service (QoS) profiles, but also application-oriented QoS targets. This is particularly challenging for satellite multimedia networks that lack fast closed-loop power control and reliable feedbacks. In this paper, we present a cross-layer packet scheduling scheme, namely Hybrid Queuing and Reception Adaptation (HQRA), which performs joint adaptations by considering the traffic information and QoS targets from the applications, the queuing dynamics induced from the network, as well as the end-to-end performance and channel variations from respective users. By jointly optimizing multiple performance criteria at different layers, the scheme enjoys quality-driven, channel-dependant, and network-aware features. HQRA can well accommodate return link diversity and the imperfect feedbacks, whilst ensuring robustness in highly heterogeneous and dynamic satellite environments. We evaluate its performance over diverse network and media configurations in comparison with the state-of-the-art solutions. We observe noticeable performance gains on application-oriented QoS, bandwidth utilization, and objective video quality, together with favorable fairness and scalability measures.

Enhancement of Qos For 4G Wireless Networks Using Cross Layer Design
Quality of service (QoS) is considered as the backbone of any heterogeneous wireless networks. The goal is to come up with the work presents a improved QoS framework for multimedia streaming across 4G heterogeneous wireless networks that can be achieved by applying cross layer technique in the network design. We focus on three main places where the cross layer design that helps to improve the Q...
متن کاملA Survey on QoS Enhancement in Mobile Multimedia Services using Cross-Layer Design in 4G Wireless Networks
Present 3G capability to cater for subscriber demand for high data rate and QoS [Quality of Service] is substantially less than 4G networks. It is expected that 3G networks will not be able to meet the needs of services like video-conferencing, full motion video etc in terms of QoS. 4G networks provide subscriber with a higher bandwidth (5GHz), and mobile data rate greater than 100Mbps. However...
متن کاملA Survey on Cross-Layer Design Frameworks for Multimedia Applications over Wireless Networks
In the last few years, the Internet throughput, usage and reliability have increased almost exponentially. The introduction of broadband wireless mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and cellular networks together with increased computational power have opened the door for a new breed of applications to be created, namely real-time multimedia applications. Delivering real-time multimedia traffic ove...
متن کاملCross-Layer Adaptation of H.264/AVC over 3G UMTS Mobile Video Services
This paper deals with the analysis of user perceived visual quality for mobile multimedia services. H.264/AVC is selected for low resolution video encoding, and 3G UMTS is considered for mobile data services. From subjective tests results, the combined impact of different service– and network–level parameters is inferred. As a result, different cross–layer adaptation alternatives are proposed t...
